Van Meter’s Rule the High Banks at Winchester Speedway
Salem, IN (October 10, 2016) – Eddie Van Meter knew coming into Saturday’s Season Championship 50 for the Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Powered by JEGS at Winchester Speedway, he already had the 2016 series Points Championship in hand, but he couldn’t have ask for much better of a weekend with him breaking the track record in Allstar Performance qualifying, then watching his son Billy win the event from his second place finishing position.
Former series Champion KC Spillers grabbed the early lead from his pole starting position after Eddie Van Meter drew a five for the events invert. RJ Norton would take the lead from Spillers on lap four while Eddie Van Meter was working his way to the front. Eddie Van Meter then went to the front with son Billy right behind to get the lead on lap seven. Eddie Van Meter would keep the lead until Billy Van Meter passed him on lap 21. Billy Van Meter would continue to lead until a restart on lap 28 when Eddie Van Meter used the high side to get back around Billy Van Meter. Billy would track down his father and retake the lead with a strong inside move on lap 39. From there he would hold off his father to get the win.
“This one’s for my Uncle Jason who passed away this week,” remarked Billy Van Meter in victory lane. “I really wanted to win for him and glad I got the opportunity. This means a lot for our family. I want to thank everyone on our team for all the hard work and support!”
The win was Billy Van Meter’s first of the season. Eddie Van Meter would hold on to get second. 2016 Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Rookie of the Year Steven Woods would come from his 17th place starting position to finish 3rd and picked up the $100 Van Hoy Oil Hardcharger Award. Former series two time Champion Keith Sterkowitz would finish in fourth place. Josh Smith would finish in fifth place.
Eddie Van Meter picked up a $250 bonus from Van Hoy Oil for breaking the track record previously held by Scott Neal.
The series had one of its highest car counts of the season with 27 cars on hand for the 45th Annual Winchester 400 Weekend event.
Wes Russell Jr. got the win in Friday night’s 25 lap New Star event for the Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman. Brandon Barcus finished in second with Chad Richardson in third place.
The next event for the Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman will be the 2016 CRA Awards Banquet which will take place on Friday, January 6th in Indianapolis at the Crowne Plaza Downtown at Union Station.
