Hutson gets World Stock Car CRA Late Model Sportsman Victory at Winchester
Salem, IN (September 3, 2019) – 2007 Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman Powered by JEGS Champion Billy Hutson had a miserable last four weeks, with having to make major repairs on his car after an incident while racing in a Late Model Sportsman event at Angola Motor Speedway and again a week later after heavy contact with the wall at the August 17th series event at Anderson Speedway, but he turned things around in a big way getting the win in Monday’s Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman event on the famous High Banks of Winchester Speedway in the World Stock Car Festival.
“What a great weekend,” remarked Hutson in victory lane. “We’ve over come so much adversity the last four weeks. Having to rebuild this car twice, I can’t say enough about my crew and all the other people that pitched in to help us get the car back together after our bad luck at Angola and at Anderson. The car was good when we unloaded and stayed that way all weekend. This is a big win for us, it locks us in to race for the Championship and to set the track record in qualifying, that was pretty awesome!”
Hutson set the new track record in Allstar Performance qualifying on Sunday, being one of the last to qualify. The previous record held by last years event winner Eddie Van Meter was first broken by Austin Coe with a lap of 16.678, that only lasted a few minutes before Terry Fisher Jr. put down a lap of 16.549 to beat Coe. Hutson then hit the track and ran a 16.356 to set the new record and pick up a $100 cash bonus from Van Hoy Oil for establishing the new record.
Series regular season points Champion Corey Setser grabbed the early lead from his outside front row starting position after Hutson drew a five for the inverted start. Setser’s lead only lasted two laps before Fisher Jr. went by to take the lead on lap three while Hutson was making his way to second and was soon on Fisher’s back bumper.
Hutson worked the inside for several laps before finally getting around Fisher Jr. on lap 31 to take the lead. Fisher Jr. would drop out on lap 33 with tire issues. Coe and Setser were battling with former two time series Champion KC Spillers who put on a late run, passing both to move into second place and was making a charge to the front, but ran out of laps with Hutson getting the win over Spillers by a little over a half second.
For his pass of Fisher Jr., Hutson picked up the KRJ Race Products Sweet Move of the Race Award. With the win Hutson joins Setser as two of the four Chase for the Championship drivers that will compete for the series Championship on Winchester 400 Weekend. The final two positions will be determined over the series next two Chase events.
Spillers came from his eighth place starting position to finish in second and earned the Spillers Towing Hardcharger Award and the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award. Coe finished in third place. Setser would finish in fourth. J.P. Crabtree came from his ninth place starting position to finish in fifth place. Spillers and Crabtree won the ten lap heat races on Sunday evening
The next Vore’s Welding CRA Late Model Sportsman event will be the second Chase for the Championship event at the Fall Brawl at Lucas Oil Raceway on Sunday, September 15th.
