Winchester Speedway Reinventing Labor Day Racing Program

Special from Speed51.com – Labor Day weekend will look a little different at Winchester Speedway in 2021, with a new name and a shakeup for the weekend of racing at the historic half-mile.

This year, the Labor Day weekend racing event will be called the King of the Highbanks, and will feature both stock cars and open wheel racing.  Winchester Speedway promoter Bob Dillner shed first light on the change during an interview on Speed51’s “The Bullring” Tuesday.

“Basically, we are reinventing the Labor Day race at Winchester Speedway,” said Dillner.  “No longer will it be the World Stock Car Festival.  It is now the King of the Highbanks event on Labor Day at Winchester Speedway.  That will feature the CRA brand of racing, the Vore’s Compact Touring Series and also an open-wheel show as well.”

With the change, DIllner and the Winchester Speedway team hope to unite fans of both open-wheel racing and full-fendered competition for one action-packed weekend at the Indiana facility.

“What we’re trying to do is give all sorts of facets in terms of the fanbase an opportunity to come and merge together.  A lot of times, you run an open-wheel show and it will be all the open-wheel fans.  You run a stock car show, you get all the stock car fans.  With the King of the Highbanks Labor Day weekend at Winchester Speedway, the idea is to merge them and bring the open-wheel fans and bring the stock car fans together so they can enjoy all types of racing.”

That mindset is the driving force behind many of the exciting changes on the horizon at Winchester Speedway, such as the midweek Flyover States 150 scheduled for Tuesday, May 18.

“I think that’s what you need to do, really look outside the box instead of just scheduling an event and running it.  You’ve got to figure out ways to get more people in the grandstands and electrify that crowd a little more.”

There will be six racing events at Winchester Speedway during 2021, with everything from the return of USAC open-wheel competition to the ARCA Menards Series on the track’s docket.

“We have six races at Winchester Speedway this year.  Everything from open-wheel, some announced, some not announced yet, to the ARCA Menards Series.  CRA with the Late Models will be there on three different occasions.”
